Ted Lasso is a great show. I love him, you love him, many people love him. It was the booster TV series we all needed during the tough days of 2020 when the Covid-19 pandemic forced us to take shelter in our homes.
While the multi-award winning Apple TV Plus is still one of the biggest TV shows of the modern era, it wasn’t immune to problems out of the field—particularly during development on Ted Lasso’s third season.
Which is why the recent excitement over the prospect of Ted Lasso and Richmond coming to FIFA 23 seems like a distraction tactic.
Yesterday (September 20), Ted Lasso’s official Twitter account hinted that the fan-favorite soccer coach will be included in the latest installment of EA’s long-running soccer franchise. The tweet indicated that Ted and his buddies will be coming to a soccer-based video game in the near future – “Look out, Mario!” The signs that gave that away. But it was a response from the official FIFA Twitter account which all confirmed the arrival of Ted and AFC Richmond in the upcoming match; The FIFA social media team is simply following the eyes emoji:
Bringing Ted and his teammates and Richmond’s first-team squad into the AFC is a logical and dreamlike move. It’s time for Apple TV Plus to be recognized as a global phenomenon in other industries. With EA ending its licensing agreement with FIFA – the pair failed to reach an agreement on renewing their 30-year partnership – once their current agreement expired, now was the perfect time for Richmond to compete against real-world clubs in the world’s biggest football franchise games, too.
However, the harassment seems to be more than a coincidence. Well, FIFA 23 is less than a week away from release (at the time of writing), with the football title launching on Tuesday, September 27. Hinting that Ted and Richmond arrive a week before the match ends, then, it may simply be a marketing strategy to generate interest in the game And the The show is before the final season finale arrives.
However, there is no denying that Ted Lasso’s potential appearance in FIFA 23 is more than a coincidence. After all, it comes just days after a report claimed there were major development issues in the show’s third season.
According to news outlets demon (Opens in a new tab), the third season of Ted Lasso is set with – to use football-based terminology – board issues and management matters. The report noted that important script rewrites, character arc transformations, lost filming days, and filming problems at Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge are going through a never-ending cycle of a production start-up that began wearing out the show’s cast and crew. The Ted Lasso cast is supposed to be contracted to run the series until its completion, which means they can’t pursue other projects or acting opportunities until production is over.
Reportedly production costs are starting to cause problems as well. A source told Puck that season three of Ted Lasso was already 20 to 30 percent over budget, which led to Apple and Warner Bros. Television is wrestling with who will raise the money to allow filming – and the series’ long post-production phase – to complete.
The lack of clarity about Ted Lasso’s third season finale also means that a release date hasn’t been set yet, which is a big problem for Apple. Ted Lasso is the crown jewel in its streaming catalog, and the longer fans wait for its third and possibly final season, the more likely they will be disappointed and turning to Netflix shows, the Prime Video series, and shows on other platforms for their TV fix.
This will be the first time in three years that Ted Lasso’s season hasn’t been released on Apple TV Plus either — season one and two released in August 2020 and July 2021, respectively. And with the show’s casting elements when season 3 is released — co-creator and lead actor Jason Sudeikis recently told reporters (as covered by Puck) that it will arrive “at some point” — there’s not much certainty that a release date will be announced soon.
Things have been looking rosy for Ted Lasso as recently as September 13, as the series won several thunderbolts at the 2022 Primetime Emmys. However, Puck’s report definitely rocked the ship and it looks like a fundamental lack of harmony is developing within the Ted Lasso camp. If you believe the speculation, anyway.
All of this, then, makes Ted Lasso’s FIFA 23 tease seem like a way to positively spin the show after a rocky few days. From an ironic perspective, it’s a classic marketing ploy or PR ploy to distract against any negative publicity.
Of course, it could be just that: an occasional tip-off toward characters from a popular TV show who make their debut in a popular video game series. It’s possible that this announcement will always come out at this time of year, which is the case with the imminent release of FIFA 23.
However, it all seems a bit coincidental. This is the first major test Ted Lasso really has had when it comes to receiving negative press. The potential confirmation that Ted and his co-workers will come to FIFA, then, is more than just lucky in our eyes.
