iPhone 14 sales may be in trouble in Brazil – but Apple is fighting back

The iPhone 14 launch may be in trouble in Brazil, where the country’s Ministry of Justice fined 2.275 million reais ($2.38 million) on the Cupertino tech giant ($2.38 million) and ordered it to stop selling iPhone 12 and newer models.

As I mentioned ReutersThis is due to Apple not including a battery charger in the box, which is a key element of a “deliberately discriminatory practice against consumers”.

Apple stated that excluding the power adapter is to reduce the impact of carbon emissions, but as the report notes, the Brazilian authorities rejected this argument because “there is no evidence that selling a smartphone without a charger provides environmental protection.”

No charger, no emissions

in a comment on BloombergApple has said it will appeal the ban on iPhone sales. “Power converters represent our largest use of zinc and plastic, and removing them from the box has helped cut more than two million metric tons of carbon emissions – the equivalent of removing 500,000 cars from the road annually,” the company said in an emailed statement.

Apple appears optimistic about the outcome, with the company saying it has “already won a number of court decisions in Brazil on the matter and we are confident that our customers are aware of the different options for charging and connecting their devices.”

Since the iPhone 12, Apple has decided not to include a power adapter in the box. The reason for this is due to the myriad of USB-A power adapters available to customers, whether they already have them from previous iPhone purchases or other smartphones, or through third-party vendors.

Apple introduced MagSafe as another method of charging, but the decision was met with mixed reactions. This isn’t the first time Brazil has had problems with Apple not including a charger, as São Paulo previously fined the Cupertino $2 million tech giant for not including a charger (via Mac rumors)
